#CreativeToWatch

Kimberly Divad is a writer, actress, model and director based in NY.

What do you do?

I’m an actor, writer, director and model.

As a screenwriter I really enjoy genre and I’m looking to breakthrough within that niche. I  specifically enjoy horror/thriller  and love dark comedies. Im a fan of surrealism and absurdity and love the flexibility these mediums allow to explore. I just like to have fun and my mind naturally leans towards these stories.

As a kid Ive always wrote short stories, poems, etc. Edgar Allan Poe was a huge inspiration for me, as well as R.L Stine so my interest in horror was always there. I loved exploring ideas from a darker perspective.

Directing is something I’m currently understanding and having a lot of fun with what it means. I realized I wanted to be a director when I wrote  my shorts and realized I wanted to be able to show the story. When I write everything is clear in my mind.

For modeling I've always enjoyed collaborating with a team to create stories and feelings and capturing that moment in time. Its such a different medium from film where you have to choose 1 image to capture the moment. I just love collaborating overall.

What is does your creative process look like? Random. But I’m being more intentional about todo lists and setting deadlines for myself

How do you prepare for a job or role?

Every positions requires different things.

For acting its understanding the emotional depths of my character and connecting to how and why they are who they are

For writing its understanding a clients need for whatever story they want to tell. Sometimes its a specific idea or character.

Directing is one of greener mediums  and I start off with the tone- how exactly do I want to tell this story?

Model- coming ready to collaborate (though with everything else i come ready to collaborate as well lol)

What inspires you?

Literally everything. Life gives you so many gems when you take a breath. Im inspired by nature, strangers (LOVE people watching) i have a horror brain so I’m very hyper aware of my surroundings

How do you break out of a creative funk?

Creating through it. I have to remind myself that everything’s not going to be great and thats okay. The very definition of "great" is subjective anyhow.

I find as long as I do something towards any one of my goals at least I’m giving myself a fighting chance

Favorite form of self care?

Baths. I’m a pisces.

What’s some creative advice you live by?

Don’t forget to live (or something to that effect)

What is something pertaining to your career that you’ve always wanted to do? Stunt work!

Who would your dream creative collaboration include?

A24. I’m a part of a FB group "A24 film group" where we just geek out on our favorite movies, characters etc and we identify A24 as a genre haha.

My desire to work with them just comes from the creative expression they allow for their filmmakers and me being a fan of their work.

Also Jordan Peele, Yorgis Lanthimos, Ari aster, Edgar Wright, Bong Joon-ho, Stefon Bristol, Janicza Bravo, Darren aronofsky, Mariama Diallo, I can literally go on lol. There are so many artists and filmmakers i admire. I feel bad not being able to name them all haha. But if you're out there with crazy ideas then I'd love to work with you! And if you don’t have crazy ideas I'd still love to work with you. I still love coming of age, comedy, family dramas etc. Im a sucker for lifetime movies and being a part of one is definitely of my career bucket list lol.

What are your favorite creative outlets outside of your job?

Right now I’m teaching myself the Bō. I've always been interested in martial arts and feel like I was probably a ninja in my past life.

An artist or creative that is really inspiring you right now ?
