Pia Lindsay: Fashion Designer
What has been the evolution to starting your brand?
The evolution of starting my brand was the pandemic. It was during those hard times when I found comfort in creating. I have been designing for other brands for about 12 years and it was the perfect time to build a brand of my own.
What is one job or career that wasn't the right fit but came with a teaching moment?
I have two!
1. When I just got out of college I worked as a fashion colorist. I spent everyday in a dark room comparing different hues of color for each collection. It was one of those jobs that I hated doing but because I developed a heightened sense of color, my brand has become known for the vibrant color palettes I use for each collection.
2. I worked in Asia for many years as a designer. I worked very closely with pattern makers, sewers, fabric vendors, print designers etc. Being in a foreign country, not being able to speak the native language, and being far from all things familiar was a teaching moment in itself. Not only did I learn so much about my craft and the industry but I learned so much about myself. It's so important to develop a good work ethic and to be confident in yourself. I believe that it will reflect in your work/ brand.
Did you pick up any skills/hobbies during the pandemic?
Home decor. As crazy as it might sound it's actually really therapeutic for me to organize and create a cozy home. We spent so much time at home during the pandemic. I love having a relaxing and creative place to call home.
Looking back over the last 2 years, what has been your greatest struggle and your most proud moment?
My brand, Pia Lindsay Studio. It's scary to go out on your own and create a brand from the ground up but I'm also really proud of what I've accomplished so far.
What is your favorite hidden gem in NYC?
I guess I would say my favorite hidden gem would be battery park. I spend a lot of time sketching at that park. It's peaceful and the plus is that my dog is allowed on the grass.
What are your fav books or podcasts right now ?
I tend to gravitate towards books about the history of fashion. There is a book I keep at my studio called Fashion designers by Pamela Golbin. It's a breakdown of all the haute couture designers, silhouettes and trends starting all the way back from 1949 to the early 2000's.
Favorite form of self care?
Bubble baths. I'm a water sign, so being near or in water is a must!
If you were to take a dream vacation right now- where would it be?
Bali. Definitely manifesting this for 2022.
What or who inspires you?
I get inspired by my family and friends. They believe in me so much and that honestly keeps me pushing towards my goal.
Favorite resources for creatives?
Museums, fabric stores
